Technology giant Amazon’s audiobook company Audible has launched a new app in India called Audible Suno featuring original audio series, in a bid to expand its reach in India’s highly competitive digital entertainment and streaming space.
Amazon has tied up with leading homegrown digital content studios, including TVF, OML, Culture Machine, Film Companion, Arre, Terribly Tiny Tales, and others for original shows and audio series on the Audible Suno platform. This new platform will feature hundreds of hours of Audible’s original audio series across a plethora of genres, helmed by entertainers such as Amitabh Bachchan, Anurag Kashyap, Nawaazuddin Siddiqui, Tabu, Neena Gupta and Vir Das.
Audible Suno currently offers shows in a range of genres, including horror (Kaali Awaazein), romance and relationships (Matrimonial Anonymous and Piya Milan Chowk), suspense (Thriller Factory) and comedy series (The Unexperts by Abish Mathew). Non-fiction series include interviews with some of the country’s biggest stars, and socially relevant subjects such as mental health, sex education and the rights of the LGBTQI+ community.
While Audible Suno is an Android-only app, iOS users in India can access the content via the native Audible app. Amazon shared that the core Audible app has a large library of over 200,000 audiobooks, including 250 recently added titles in Hindi and Urdu. Audible is deepening its presence into an already crowded content market with plethora of podcast options and video streaming apps, including Amazon Prime.
Audible Founder and CEO Don Katz described Audible Suno as “a world-first for Audible” and found it culturally relevant for India. He said in a statement, “I’ve always been passionate about the transformative power of the spoken word, and I’m delighted to be able to offer this breadth of famous voices and culturally resonant genres with unlimited access, ad-free and free of charge.”
“When we get great ideas in India we can take them to other countries we go to,” Katz said. “That is our future… to be originally creative. We have already proved that repositioning a book as a script is a powerful to allow people to use their time.”
The company said it is just getting started in India with 60 audio series. The series are across genres like romance, thriller, comedy and self-development.
