Everyone has only 24 hours in a day, nothing more and nothing less. But how you make best use of this 24 hours is a complicated question to answer. Successful people who made big in their life also have the same 24 hours, but how are they utilizing it. Sometimes, Working hard may not give you the desired result; you will need to work smart.
Even though we work smart, we often feel we are getting the desired output. I use to ask myself on how to be more productive, how are successful people accomplish so many things with the same 24 hours, is there any productivity hacks which can help me reach the same heights as these successful people.
Finally, after long research, here are six lessons on productivity hacks from successful people which can put your day to the best use,
1. Only thing which matters in FOCUS
Most of the time, we find ourself with so many things to do in our to-do list and feel overwhelmed for not doing even one thing in the list properly.
Steve Jobs revealed a tip on focus; he said, “I would take a sheet of paper and ask if my company can do only one thing next year, what is it? And, we literally shut everything else down.”
It’s okay to be ambitious, but just make sure you have a clear plan on things to do and when to do. Set your priorities and work accordingly. And, never waste time on things that don’t contribute to your overall goal. Start doing things and always keep a check on your progress.
2. Never have too many GOALS
Life is short, and often we want to achieve too many things in the shortest time possible. But trying to do may not give the desired result.
If you are stuck with too many goals, try following 3 simple steps of Warren Buffett’s 5/25 rule.
- Step 1: Write down your top 25 goals
- Step 2: Circle down the top 5 goals that are important to you
- Step 3: Put those circled goals in List A and the rest of the 20 goals in List B.
And, when you are working on List A, keep a check on List B as well. Be careful that you don’t fall into the trap of working hard; it’s about working smart to accomplish your goals. It involves removing all possible distractions.
3. More Emails, Fewer Phone Calls and Meeting
Mark Cuban said I would rather do 700 or even 1000+ email than to sit in a long, tedious and boring meeting. He is best known for time management and also revealed that he doesn’t waste time on phone calls or useless meetings unless it pays him as that’s his #1 priority.
If something is solvable in emails, solve it with email and most of the time, most problems are solvable in email. This is how he maintains his zero interruption schedule.
4. Always have Small Meetings
Jeff Bezoz, founder of Amazon, said, “Always plan and circulate agenda before the meetings and get everyone to agree on the outcomes of meetings before the meeting. And, give a plan on the length of the meeting and stick to it.”
Everyone has at least stuck in one of the work meetings that are just simply a waste of time. This is because they are either too big, or too many people involved, or there are too few constraints, etc.
Jeff Bezoz also had another simple rule – Never attend a meeting where there are too many people that 2 pizza cant feed them. This 2-pizza rule is widely accepted and followed by many successful companies across the world.
5. Use two monitors
This may sound weird that we already have too many screens in our life. But before you decide to reject this idea, let me tell you why,
Bill Gates suggests that to get two monitors – one to use for the things that you are working on and other dedicated only for email. This will help you to avoid distraction and not lose your place on things that you are working on while checking emails.
6. Do the quick and easy stuff first
Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, said, “The simple rule of business is that if you start doing easier things first, then you can make quick progress.”
If it works for Mark Zuckerberg, it will damn sure work for you as well. You can also reward yourself with something every time you accomplish something. It sounds simple yet highly effective.
And here you have the six things that you can try which worked for successful people and helped them achieve their goals and made them productive. You don’t need to incorporate everything from day 1, even if you can work on one or two easy productivity hacks you will get something.
