While growing up, Samrat Reddy, was a frequent visitor of a local juice and smoothie shop in the neighborhood in Chennai as he was not fond of the regular beverages. During his stay in Australia and UK, Samrat observed that there were more cafes offering coffee than the outlets serving smoothies. It was in Scotland when he actually thought of setting up a smoothie business as he felt that people would incorporate smoothies into their lifestyle as it is a healthier variant than the regular beverages. But it was only in 2015, 7 years after he first thought of a smoothie empire, he decided to make it happen. Samrat conducted a detailed groundwork and comprehensive research on the concept and the market for a year and a half and realized that the demand for healthy alternatives for snacks and drinks is increasing steadily. He subsequently came with a business plan to implement the idea of a smoothie business. Thus, Drunken Monkey was finally launched in February 2016.
The shift in drinking preference, people aiming for a healthy lifestyle and health concerns like cholesterol and obesity caused by junk food is expected to supplement the growth of the smoothie culture in India. Started in February 2016, Drunken Monkey was initially a single smoothie bar in Hyderabad. Today the company boasts of 60 outlets across the country and is stillgrowing! Samrat Reddycan be best described as someone who is continuously looking for novelty, speed, and competition.
After acquiring an Engineering Degree from Chennai, he worked in Australia for a while before moving to Scotland for MBA from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. It was in Scotland that he actually thought of setting up a smoothie business. He was highly inspired by Starbucks and wanted to make smoothies a cult drink, similar to what Starbucks did to coffee!
However, his smoothie empire did not start there. From there, he went on to be involved in a variety of businesses. In 2008, he set up, ‘Hestia Studios,’ a 3D animation and visualization firm, which at that time was way ahead of what was happening in India in terms of design and visual representation. He has also managed a family owned Steel Plant, ‘Delta PEB,’ for over 4 years after which he was a part of an Oil Drilling Company in the US, also a Water Treatment Plant in Cameroon.
In 2015, almost 7 years after he first thought of a smoothie empire, he decided it was time to make it happen. After a year and a half of R&D, planning, and refining, the “Drunken Monkey” was born. He wanted a quirky, out of the box brand name to stand out from the crowd and inspire curiosity, hence the name “Drunken Monkey”. With a vision to inspire people to feel beautiful, young and full of energy by adopting a “Naturally High” way of life, he kick-started the country’s largest smoothie chain in the making.
A self-confessed adventure addict, Samrat has always been first in line to get things going, whether it is work or play. In fact, for him there is no difference between work and play! He takes his job just as seriously as he takes his sport. The Drunken Monkey founder also leadsacricket team which is highly reputed in the Hyderabad Corporate circle. He believes that team sports are a great way to build strong work ethics and team spirit.
